Now Hiring: Software Developer

The Software Developer will work closely with the senior management team and the technology department to create new applications, develop websites, and provide IT support for the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis and the World Chess Hall of Fame (the “Saint Louis Chess Campus”). While strategic direction and specific assignments will be given by senior management, the Software Developer will play an integral role in developing new ideas to improve infrastructure and software solutions, meeting deadlines, identifying requirements, and fostering strong working relationships within the department and across the campus.

This is a position for an outgoing self-starter that shares our passion for fulfilling the campus mission. While this position will maintain regular office hours, deadlines drive our work, and the ideal candidate will be available as needed. Specific duties include:

Software Development

  • Identify software requirements, develop use cases and detailed specifications

  • Work closely with designers, staff and contractors to meet organizational needs

  • Write & modify source code for web-based and standalone applications

  • Testing, source control, documentation and troubleshooting

  • Prepare and present training materials to staff

  • Maintain existing software and systems

Web Development

  • Maintain web development environment, including system administration

  • Web server administration (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP)

  • Create interactive web apps

  • Find and resolve performance issues and broken web content

  • Content Management System & Customer Relationship Management  administration

Projects

  • Projects vary in scope and duration and include software development, infrastructure updates, and specialized IT needs for major events

Other duties as assigned

 

Necessary Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience

  • 2-5 years software development experience

  • 2-5 years administering and developing in a LAMP environment (HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL)

  • 2-5 years experience implementing and administering Content Management Systems and Customer Relationship Management Systems, preferably Drupal and CiviCRM

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to identify and solve problems quickly and without direct supervision

Desired Skills

  • Some audio visual experience a plus

  • Some network administration experience a plus

  • No chess-playing ability required, but familiarity with the game is a plus

This is a full-time position at an exciting organization. The ideal candidate will own this position and have the ability to rapidly effect changes that positively impact the Campus. Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes a generous benefits package. Training is also available. With a campus spanning five buildings and hundreds of classes in area schools each week, the Chess Campus provides members and guests with opportunities to learn, play and explore the game of chess. The CCSCSL hosts major national and international events, provides weekly classes, lectures, tournaments and other events designed to increase the popularity of the game 7 days per week. The World Chess Hall of Fame features exhibitions and events designed to introduce chess in various contexts to the Saint Louis community.
