Biography

Fabiano Caruana is currently the third highest-rated chess player in the world, a former World Championship Challenger, and one of the most consistent elite competitors of the past decade. A top-ten rated player for over ten years — much of that time spent in the top five — Caruana has been rated number two on multiple occasions. A strong argument can be made that his excellent play and remarkable consistency made him the second strongest player in the world over the past decade, trailing only Magnus Carlsen.

With a peak FIDE rating of 2844, Caruana holds the third highest rating ever recorded since the inception of Professor Arpad Elo’s rating system in 1970.

Major Tournament Victories

Caruana has won many elite super-tournaments throughout his career. He is the winner of both the 2023 and 2025 Grand Chess Tours, cementing his status among the world’s best.

His most recent victories include:

  • American Cup (2022)
  • Sinquefield Cup (2023)
  • Superbet Chess Classic (2023 and 2024)
  • Zagreb Rapid & Blitz (2024)
  • Champions Showdown: The Kings (2025)

Four Consecutive U.S. Championships

Fabiano Caruana has won four consecutive U.S. Championships — a feat last accomplished by Bobby Fischer in the 1960s. This streak underscores his dominance in American chess and places him in historic company.

Chess Olympiad Performances

Caruana has represented the United States in Chess Olympiads since 2016. He led the team to gold at the Baku Chess Olympiad that year, also earning an individual bronze medal on board one. He was also the leader of the American teams that won silver medals at the Batumi (2018) and Budapest (2024) Chess Olympiads.

2018 World Chess Championship

In 2018, Fabiano Caruana challenged Magnus Carlsen for the World Chess Championship — one of the most anticipated matches in modern chess history. Though he did not claim the title, the match confirmed his place among the very best in the game.
