Biography

Fide Master Rose Atwell is a Southern California native who likes to play chess, to put it mildly! Through Labor Day weekend this year Rose has played 150 (!) FIDE rated games showing some great results in her most recent events. This August she was third in the 370- player Pacific Coast Open, defeating Grandmaster Francesco Sonis in the last round and won the 171-player Central California Open, defeating Grandmaster Enrico Sevillano in the last round. To top the amazing month off Rose won the Charlotte Chess Center Labor Day IM norm tournament and made her second International Master norm.

None of these performances are necessarily the best result of Rose’s career to date. That might be her sensational result in the 2024 North American Open in Las Vegas where she scored 6 out of 9 against a field averaging 2480, good for a performance rating of 2596!
This will be Rose’s second US Chess Women’s Championship.
