International Master Anna Zatonskih is a legend of American chess. A 4-time U.S. Women’s Champion (2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011), her performance in 2009 was particularly noteworthy as scored 8.5 from 9 to finish two points ahead of her nearest competitor.
Born in Ukraine, Anna has represented the United States since 2002 and is one of only two players to play on all three U.S. Women’s Olympiads teams which have medaled (silver in 2004 and bronze in 2008 and 2024). She played an especially key role in 2008 when she won an individual gold medal on board two.
Anna’s greatest performance to date was winning the 2023 Cairns Cup by a full point and making a Grandmaster norm despite being the lowest rated player in the competition. She is the second highest rated American woman ever (2537 FIDE May 2011) behind only Susan Polgar.
Zatonskih is married to grandmaster Daniel Fridman.
