Every competitive chess player is familiar with classic material imbalances, such as the dynamic tension between a bishop and a knight. But what happens when the board devolves into chaos and the material configurations become entirely unorthodox?
In this highly specialized installment of our Grandmaster Lecture Series, GM Alex Yermolinsky dives deep into the complexities of unusual material imbalances. Running from March 24 through April 14, this intensive four-week class goes beyond standard opening theory and basic endgames. GM Yermolinsky brings his elite, grandmaster-level insight to every position, teaching you how to properly evaluate, navigate, and ultimately win when the material on the board defies conventional wisdom.
This curriculum is highly recommended for average to high-rated chess players who have over-the-board tournament experience. If you are looking to elevate your strategic understanding and break through rating plateaus, this advanced breakdown is for you. It is also a fantastic opportunity for any dedicated chess enthusiast looking to directly engage with our Resident Grandmaster.
Our Grandmaster in Residence program provides an exclusive opportunity to learn directly from some of the game’s greatest minds. Each resident GM brings their own unique expertise to the classroom, meaning our specialized lecture topics are constantly evolving to give you fresh, world-class perspectives on the game.
Whether you are studying with us locally or tuning in from across the globe, there are multiple ways to experience the lecture:
Attend In-Person: Join us at the Saint Louis Chess Club in the main classroom. Classes run weekly from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. This event is entirely free for active members. If you are visiting the campus, membership day passes are readily available at the front desk.
