Abhimanyu Mishra: A Career of Firsts

Grandmaster Abhimanyu Mishra’s career to date has been one of firsts. The New Jersey native holds the American record for the youngest player to achieve an Expert rating of 2000. He reached that milestone at seven years, six months, and 22 days. In addition, Mishra earned his Master rating of 2200 at just 9 years, 2 months, and 17 days. He also once held the record for the youngest International Master in chess history. He achieved that title at 10 years, 9 months, and 20 days. Faustino Oro has since eclipsed that mark by a month.

Mishra’s Youngest Grandmaster Record

Most importantly, Abhimanyu Mishra still holds the most significant of all youth records: the youngest Grandmaster in chess history. He set the mark at 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days in 2021, and it still stands today. As a result, Mishra’s name is firmly etched in the record books. He remains one of the most remarkable prodigies the game has ever seen.

Mishra’s Breakthrough at the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss

In September 2025, Mishra delivered his career-best event to date at the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss. Along the way, he defeated World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju in round five. Abhimanyu Mishra thereby became the youngest player ever to defeat a reigning world champion in classical chess. Furthermore, Abhi scored an undefeated 7/11 in the event with a tournament performance rating of 2828. That result was good for a whopping 32-point FIDE rating gain.

Mishra, who recently turned 17, is currently rated equal 95th in the world. He is also the seventh-rated junior, further underscoring his rapid rise in elite chess. With a trail of broken records and a landmark victory over the reigning world champion, Abhimanyu Mishra continues to establish himself among the brightest talents in modern chess.
