17-year-old Rose Atwell is a Southern California native who likes to play chess, to put it mildly! Rose played close to 200 tournament games in 2025 and over 110 in 2026 as of the beginning of September. The newly minted International Master finished an undefeated second at the 2026 Southern California Championship, an eight-player round robin which included four Grandmasters.
This past March Atwell became the first woman to win the U.S. National High School Championship in the over 50-year history of the event, taking the title on tiebreak over International Master Eric Liu.
Rose Atwell will represent the United States in the 2026 Women’s Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
One interesting fact about Atwell is that she does not believe in women only titles and didn’t apply for the WFM, WIM or WGM titles.
