Record Turnout for Metro Class Championship

Last weekend’s beautiful weather encouraged a record number of participants to come play in the 7th Annual Metro Class championship -- a 60-player field divided into six rating sections. The winner of each class was guaranteed $250 and the title of class champion, but players were offered extra incentive to fight for a perfect 3/3 score for an additional $50 bonus.

Epic Strength U.S. Championships Return to Saint Louis in April

SAINT LOUIS (Feb. 3, 2014) – The recent and undeniable chess swell felt around the nation rises to serve one epic event: the fight for the American throne.

In April, the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis will bring together one of the strongest fields ever to compete for the national title, America’s top 12 Grandmasters who combine for a 2732 rating average. The 2015 U.S. Championship will be held in St. Louis from March 31 through April 14, simultaneously alongside 12 of the nation’s top females in the 2015 U.S. Women’s Championship.

More than 50 Boy Scouts Earn Chess Merit Badge at CCSCSL

The Chess Club and Scholastic Center is proud of its association with the Boy Scouts of America, and this year’s first Boy Scout Merit Badge Day, held on January 18th, was a great example of the mutual respect and support between the two organizations. The January event  handed out 52 new Chess Merit Badges to Scouts, making it one of the largest sessions since the CCSCSL held the initial launch event in September 2011. Since then, more than 60,000 Chess Merit Badges have been awarded nationally.

Musings of a Resident GM: Akobian Annotations

I really enjoyed another Resident GM rotation -- the Saint Louis Chess Club has become a second home for me. I have spent lots of time here in the past two and a half years, and I really enjoy each of my visits. I am looking forward to coming back at the end of March for the 2015 U.S. Championship.

Before I leave, I wanted to annotate a game for the Musings of a Resident GM Blog. I played a six-game match against GM Julio Becerra on Deceber 8-10 in Lawrence, Kansas, and I managed to win 4.5-1.5. Here is one of my best games:
