WGM Jennifer Shahade Visits The Chess Club

The wind chill in St. Louis has been below zero in recent days, but the city warmed up Thursday evening with the appearance of Chess Life Online editor WGM Jennifer Shahade. She was in town working on arrangements for the upcoming U.S. Championship, to be held at the sparkling Chess and Scholastic Center of St. Louis, and was kind enough to hold three clock simuls for the local chess crowd.

The tournament, which dates back to 1845, will take place from May 7 through 17, 2009 and will offer a purse of more than $130,000 in prize money.

The recent success of the first CCSCSL tournament of 2009, the Winter Open, has brought new hope for the success of tournament chess in the Saint Louis region. Forty One players braved the cold to ensure a full prize fund payout on January 17th. With the apparent equation for success firmly in hand, the CCSCSL tournament directors have focused their attention to the "Knights" tournaments.
