St. Louis Public Library Summer Camps explored a variety of topics through activities that encouraged teamwork, communication skills, problem solving, and strategic thinking. Over 551 children participated in one or two of 48 camps offered by the Library in summer 2018. The completion of projects during the special interest camps provided evidence of learning. For example, Campers at the Chess Camps learned the fundamentals of chess, strategy and tactics. The knowledge gained and the skills developed during Chess Camp were demonstrated during tournament play on the last day. The Chess instructors greeted the campers each day, used positive reinforcement throughout the camp, and made found a way to make each camper feel special. Each child proudly took home a chess medal for their participation in the program. A new appreciate of chess was gained by all participants, including library staff.
Comment from survey by parent: The instructors were excellent coaches, and the library staff that assisted in registering for and conducting the camp were friendly and professional. My son was very well taken care of, treated with dignity, and felt very encouraged. Our first time participating in camps through the library and we had a great experience. We’d love to return.
