Biography

Grandmaster Abhi Mishra’s career to date has been one of firsts. The New Jersey native holds the American record for the youngest player to achieve an Expert rating of 2000. He reached that milestone at seven years, six months, and 22 days. In addition, Abhi earned his Master rating of 2200 at just 9 years, 2 months, and 17 days. He also once held the record for the youngest International Master in chess history. He achieved that title at 10 years, 9 months, and 20 days. Russian prodigy Roman Shogdzhiev has since eclipsed that mark.

Most importantly, Abhi still holds the most significant of all youth records: the youngest Grandmaster in chess history. He set the mark at 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days in 2021, and it still stands today. As a result, Abhi’s name is firmly etched in the record books.
In September 2025, Abhi delivered his career-best event to date at the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss. Along the way, he defeated World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju in round five. He thereby became the youngest player ever to defeat a reigning world champion in classical chess. Furthermore, Abhi scored an undefeated 7/11 in the event with a tournament performance rating of 2828. That result was good for a whopping 32-point FIDE rating gain.

2026 has started well for 17-year-old Mishra with first place ties in the Menorca and Demana Santa Opens. He is currently rated equal 85th in the world and also tied as the seventh-rated junior.
