Awonder Liang is one of the bright young stars of American chess. As a prodigy, he set numerous age group records in his youth. Now, Liang is starting to fulfill that remarkable potential on the world stage. Over the past two years, his FIDE rating has risen more than 75 points. As a result, he is currently ranked among the top 25 players in the world. His rapid ascent signals that even greater achievements may lie ahead.
Recent results demonstrate that Awonder Liang can compete with the very best players in the game. Notably, he tied for second in the 2024 US Championship, one of the most prestigious national events in chess. In addition, he achieved a 50 percent score in the 2025 Quantbox Chennai Grandmasters event. This result further proved his ability to hold his own at the highest level of competition. More recently, Liang won the 2025 US Masters, adding another impressive title to his growing list of achievements. These performances confirm that he belongs among the world’s elite.
Beyond his competitive achievements, Awonder Liang is also an accomplished student and academic. He majored in finance at the University of Chicago and is now a graduate student at Webster University. Furthermore, he is an excellent coach with a strong track record. He seconded Carissa Yip to an outstanding performance at the 2024 Budapest Chess Olympiad. He also helped Yip achieve a solid result at the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup.
Liang’s versatility extends to chess variants as well. He and fellow Grandmaster Jeffrey Xiong won the Bughouse World Championship in 2021, 2022, and 2024. Bughouse is a popular chess variant played in teams of two. This combination of elite play, academic excellence, and coaching dedication makes Liang one of the most well-rounded young talents in the chess world today.
