Hans Niemann

Hans Niemann finished in a large tie for second in the 2024 U.S. Chess Championship and shared fifth place in 2025. He will be hoping for more this year.

Currently tied for nineteenth in the world at 2725 FIDE, Hans has had an eventful year to date. He started off 2026 with a fine performance at Tata Steel where he tied for third in an elite field and followed this up with two excellent match results: a 7.5-4.5 victory over Awonder Liang and a 4-4 tie with two-time World Championship participant Ian Nepomniachtchi, but slightly disappointing results in tournaments in Chennai and Tashkent.

2026 will only be Niemann’s fourth U.S. Championship as his progress has been markedly different from other young talents. Rated 2465 FIDE on his 17th birthday, he was considered a promising youngster, but nothing more. Fast forward two years and Niemann was rated 200 points higher, with no sign of slowing down. By December of 2022 he had crossed 2700 FIDE, the traditional standard for admission into the world elite.

Niemann firmly put himself on the map when he defeated Anish Giri, Nikita Vitiugov and Etienne Bacrot in matches during the summer of 2024, quieting naysayers who doubted his abilities.

Hans Niemann will make his debut for the U.S. Olympiad team this September in Uzbekistan.
