Biography

Humpy Koneru is an Indian Grandmaster and reigning two-time Women’s World Rapid Chess Champion, as well as a runner-up of the Women’s World Chess Championship in 2011. Koneru is the highest-rated Indian woman, as well as the fifth highest rated woman in the world. Koneru is a trailblazer, being at one point the youngest female chess player ever to achieve the Grandmaster title at the age of 15 years, 1 month, 27 days, as well as the first Indian female player to earn the Grandmaster title. Koneru won three gold medals at the World Youth Championships in 1997 (U10 Girls), 1998 (U12 Girls), and 2000 (U14 Girls). Koneru also won the 2000 and 2002 British Women’s Championship, as well as the 10th Asian Women’s Individual Championship and Indian Women’s Championship in 2003. More recently, Koneru became the 2019 Women’s World Rapid Champion. Additionally she won the 2020 FIDE Online Chess Olympiad as well as the second edition of the Cairns Cup during the same year. In 2024, Koneru would become the Women’s World Rapid Chess Champion a second time.
