17-year-old Rose Atwell is a Southern California native who likes to play chess, to put it mildly! Rose has played around 200 tournament games the past year and is rapidly improving. She will soon receive the International Master title having made the necessary norms and crossed over 2400 FIDE at the 2026 Southern California Championship. There she finished an undefeated second place in the eight-player round robin competition which included four Grandmasters.
This past March Rose became the first woman to win the U.S. National High School Championship in the over 50-year history of the event, taking the title on tiebreak over International Master Eric Liu.
Rose is currently the 3rd highest rated female player in the country and has qualified to represent the United States in the 2026 Women’s Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. She is currently rated number 39 in the world (2410 FIDE) among female players.
