Zoey Tang

17-year-old Woman Grandmaster Zoey Tang of Portland, Oregon is the reigning U.S. Girls Champion. She was the 89th rated women in the world and number 10 among those under 21 on the May 2026 FIDE rating list.

Zoey tied for first in the 2024 Women’s Continental Championship held in the Dominican Republic and was the winner of the 2024 WIM Ruth Haring National Tournament of Girls State Champions.  Zoey made history when she won the 2023 Oregon Championship, becoming both the youngest ever and first female to do so. She repeated this feat in 2024. 

Zoey made her debut playing for the U.S. national team at the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Team Chess Championship in Linares, Spain. More recently, Zoey played in the 2026 Reykjavik Open where she defeated Croatian Grandmaster Leon Livacic (FIDE 2571).

One of the founders of Chess A2Z, along with her younger brother Austin who is a USCF rated master, Zoey has played a key role in supporting this non-profit organization which promotes chess for young players in Oregon.

This spring, Zoey was the valedictorian of her graduating class from Westview High School in Portland. She will be attending Stanford this fall.
