Biography

17-year-old Woman Grandmaster Zoey Tang of Portland, Oregon, a senior at Westview High School, is the reigning U.S. Girls Champion. She is currently tied for number 10 in the world rankings among girls under 20.

Zoey tied for first in the 2024 Women’s Continental Championship held in the Dominican Republic which earned her a spot in the 2025 FIDE World Cup. The winner of the 2024 WIM Ruth Haring National Tournament of Girls State Champions, Zoey made history when she won the 2023 Oregon Championship, becoming both the youngest ever and first female to do so. She repeated this feat in 2024. Zoey made her debut playing for the U.S. national team this past fall at the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Team Chess Championship in Linares, Spain.

One of the founders of Puddletown Chess, along with her younger brother Austin who is a USCF rated master, Zoey has played a key role in promoting this non-profit organization which promotes chess for young players in Oregon.
