2018 Spring Exhibitions Opening Reception

Registration is closed for this event

The World Chess Hall of Fame invites you to the opening reception for Painted Pieces: Art Chess from Purling London, The Staunton Standard: Evolution of the Modern Chess Set, and The Sinquefield Effect: The Resurgence of American Chess.

Painted Pieces features traditional Staunton chess sets transformed by celebrated contemporary artists into one-of-a-kind, hand-painted works. Featured artists include American painter Sophie Matisse, British artists Tom Hackney and Caio Locke, and influential street artists Thierry Noir and Mr Doodle, among others.

The Staunton Standard includes a spectacular array of Staunton and Staunton-style chessmen, which were first introduced to the public in September of 1849 and are still the international standard for tournament play. The exhibit showcases early Staunton chessmen as well as sets owned by famous players and those created for historic tournaments.

The Sinquefield Effect celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Saint Louis Chess Club and the rapid resurgence of chess in the United States. The exhibition includes artifacts, photographs, and video, and explores the impact of Dr. Jeanne and Rex Sinquefield’s instrumental role in Saint Louis’ growing chess culture.
