ZATONSKIH WITHDRAWS FROM CHAMPIONSHIP; REPLACED BY DOUG ECKERT

Saint Louis , May 11 -- Anna Zatonskih withdrew Sunday from the U.S. Chess Championship because of an unspecified medical illness.

"There were some medical issues," said Tony Rich, executive director of the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, which is hosting the tournament. "I know that she went to the hospital Sunday morning."

Kamsky vs Shulman: #1 Seed vs. Defending Champ

Brooklyn’s GM Gata Kamsky will be playing against Illinois’ GM Yury Shulman today during Round 3 of the 2009 U.S. Chess Championship. Kamsky’s USCF rating is 2798, compared with Shulman’s 2697.

Kamsky is currently the highest rated competitor at the championship. Shulman, the winner of the 2008 Championship, is the fourth.

BIG UPSETS DOMINATE U.S. CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

Saint Louis, May 9, 2009 -- The second day of the U.S. Chess Championship was a repeat of the first, with big upsets and teenagers making the biggest buzz.
