IM Priyadharshan Kannappan Wins Mid-America Open

The 17th Annual Mid-America Open was held March 15-17 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Clayton, Mo., and suprisingly none of the seven grandmasters in attendance claimed the top spot. Reigning U.S. Chess League MVP and Rookie of the Year IM Priyadharshan Kannapan steamrolled the competition, defeating two GMs along the way, to claim first place and more than $2,400 in prize money.

Kannappan's final round win against former U.S. Champion GM Alex Shabalov put him over the top. He had entered round 5 tied with six players with 3.5 points, but while the other players all drew their last games, Kannappan won to finish alone at 4.5/5.

During the course of the tournament, Kannappan faced three grandmasters, including Gregory Kaidanov, Fidel Corrales Jimenez, and Shabalov. He finished with 2.5/3 against them, the lone draw coming in a 6.5 hour marathon against the Cuban GM Corrales.

His Lindenwood University Lions teammate, IM Levan Bregadze, finished in a tie for 2nd with 4/5. Bregadze now has an unbelievable 30-game unbeaten streak, including a win and two draws against GMs this weekend! His win came against GM Suat Atalik before drawing GM Alex Yermolinsky and then GM Corrales in the final round.

Out of the more than 250 participants, a number of CCSCSL club members performed admirably at the event. Club regulars David Askin and Barry Manthe (4/5) tied for fist place in the U2000 section, and William Nesham also turned in a solid performance with a final score of 3.5/5 to tie for third.
