 2009 U.S. WOMEN'S CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD OCTOBER 2-12 AT CHESS CLUB AND SCHOLASTIC CENTER OF SAINT LOUIS ST. LOUIS, March 11, 2009 -- The 2009 U.S. Women's Chess Championship will be held from October 2 through 12 at the sparkling, new Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, which opened in July 2008. The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis also is the site of the 2009 U.S. Chess Championship, which will take place from May 7 through 17.

On March 10, 2009, Dr. Ben Chavis stopped by the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis! Dr. Ben Chavis has worn many hats, most notably were CEO of the NAACP (National Association of Advancement of Colored People), VP of the National Council of Churches, National Director of the Million Man March, Executive Director of NAALS (National African American Leadership Summit) and a prominent figure of the United Federation of Teachers. Throughout the years, Dr. Chavis has worked one-on-one with celebrities and politicians such as Run DMC, Russell Simmons, Bruce Willis, Sean Combs, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy.

ST. LOUIS, February 19, 2009  --  A $64,000 bonus in memory of late chess champion Bobby Fischer and a jackpot bonus for a "clear" first-place winner have been added to the prizes being awarded at the 2009 U.S. Chess Championship.  The tournament, which will be held May 7-17, 2009 at the new Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, will offer a purse of more than $130,000 in prize money.

In the midst of my toughest round at a blitz simultaneous at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis.

Chess could be extremely popular if it was integrated into a cardiovascular routine. (Are you listening, Wii?) I had one of my best chess workouts recently at a series of blitz simuls at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, also the host of the 2009 U.S. Championship and U.S. Women's.

I played five boards at a time and had ten minutes on each board, with my opponents taking five minutes each. At first I thought that I could easily flag everyone, but despite my running and my sensible flats, I had to win most of the games on the position. In fact, I was in danger of losing on time on many boards; I literally had to run and jump in order not to lose the majority of the games. Those on the edges were the toughest. In the end, I lost two games, drew two and won 11.

She was in town working on arrangements for the upcoming U.S. Championship, to be held at the sparkling Chess and Scholastic Center of St. Louis, and was kind enough to hold three clock simuls for the local chess crowd.

The tournament, which dates back to 1845, will take place from May 7 through 17, 2009 and will offer a purse of more than $130,000 in prize money.
