A few months back, the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis welcomed New England Patriots running back Laurence Maroney and he played with a couple of older Chess Club members.  The football star said he had picked up some great tips from the veteran chess players.

Now Maroney is the one spreading the joy of the game.  On his visit to the Boys & Girls Club of Taunton  he spent an extra hour playing chess with the eager, young challengers.

Maroney displayed his passion for chess and his appreciation for the strategy of the game.  He discussed his recognition of the many scholastic benefits that chess offers—cultivating general learning skills and helping kids to plan and think ahead

The sheer excitement of his visit lead to the formation of the Laurence Maroney Chess Club. The director of the Boys & Girls Club said he established this wonderful program because his visit interested over 50 kids in learning about chess.  Delighted about this new venture, Maroney promised to come back and see how the program was doing.

The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis would like to recognize Maroney’s efforts and is thrilled the game of chess is now reaching more kids!
