Ho- Ho- Holiday Bash Recap

The 2011 edition of the Holiday Bash proved quite exciting with unexpected results across all the boards, along with crushed dreams of victory. Okay, maybe I was the only one suffering hallucinations of first place. Considering how trying the Holiday season can prove for everyone schedules, 47 joyful souls still managed to turn up for this festive event, which featured three sections: the Open (1700+), U1700, and the U1300.

The U1300 section was conquered by Andrew Morisseau and Gary Kagan. Kagan is an experienced club player who recently transitioned into tournament play. He won the Sunday Beginner Tournament a few months ago and selected the USCF membership as his prize. This was only his third tournament. I expect to see him improve very quickly over the following months. Morisseau is your typical casual tournament player who enjoys the competition and the atmosphere, no matter how loud the kids get. This proved to be a terrific event for him.

Four player tied for first in the U1700 section: Dennis Hourcade, Aydin Turgut, Hanson Hao, and Nathan Phan. This outcome is sort of extraordinary considering that there were only eight players in the section. Congratulations to all the winners!

The Open section featured one of the strongest fields that our one-day Saturday Tournaments has seen in quite some time. FM Tansel Turgut (2381) and FM Doug Eckert (2232) shared first place with 3.5 points.
