Dear members of the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis,
February’s inclement weather resulted in an unusually high number of half-point bye requests in the early rounds of February’s Wednesday Knights Tournament -- thought it wasn’t enough to stop Knights regular Daniel Coryea (1800), who braved the conditions each week to collect a perfect 4/4 score.
The Chess Club’s Scholastic Chess Initiative has been growing steadily over the past six years, delivering impactful educational programming to students across the socio-economic spectrum -- and now it’s finally getting some corporate backing.
Remaining at the forefront of chess in education, the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis proudly introduces the Chess and Education Research Portal, a new repository of research that aims to advance exploration into the educational value of chess.
Last weekend’s beautiful weather encouraged a record number of participants to come play in the 7th Annual Metro Class championship -- a 60-player field divided into six rating sections. The winner of each class was guaranteed $250 and the title of class champion, but players were offered extra incentive to fight for a perfect 3/3 score for an additional $50 bonus.

SAINT LOUIS (Feb. 3, 2014) – The recent and undeniable chess swell felt around the nation rises to serve one epic event: the fight for the American throne.
In April, the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis will bring together one of the strongest fields ever to compete for the national title, America’s top 12 Grandmasters who combine for a 2732 rating average. The 2015 U.S. Championship will be held in St. Louis from March 31 through April 14, simultaneously alongside 12 of the nation’s top females in the 2015 U.S. Women’s Championship.
Players were out for blood in the first monthly Knights Tournament of 2015, with every game featuring wild, attacking chess. Everyone, even the lower rated players, was playing to win and no one missed a chance to complicate their game and confuse their opponent.
The Chess Club and Scholastic Center is proud of its association with the Boy Scouts of America, and this year’s first Boy Scout Merit Badge Day, held on January 18th, was a great example of the mutual respect and support between the two organizations. The January event handed out 52 new Chess Merit Badges to Scouts, making it one of the largest sessions since the CCSCSL held the initial launch event in September 2011. Since then, more than 60,000 Chess Merit Badges have been awarded nationally.
