Big Turnout, Big Competition in March Kids Beginner Tournament

The March Unrated Kids Beginner Tournament brought a total of 66 students to the world-famous Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis in hopes of winning their choice of an annual student membership to the Club or an annual United States Chess Federation (USCF) membership to compete in rated tournaments. After four rounds of brilliancies, blunders, and beginner battles, Evan Marion and Logan Huyette emerged as K-3 co-champions while returning competitor Aaradya (Adi) Diwan successfully emerged past the six-way tie for second place to capture the 4th-6th grade title.

Being a resident grandmaster here at the Saint Louis Chess Club is always a true pleasure. The experienced staff, the beautiful facilities and the many opportunities provided to players of all experience levels is truly staggering. The club has had some recent, noticeable changes. First of all the new schedule is awesome, and it is far easier for everyone to remember when the club is open (10 a.m. - 10 p.m., seven days a week!)

Twelve of the top chess players in the U.S. just got fantastic news: Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura will not be fighting for the title of 2014 U.S. Champion. 

Nakamura, currently ranked No. 8 in the world, declined his invitation citing his decision to prepare for, and compete against, only the world’s elite.

While over 200 players were playing at the 18th Annual Mid-America Open over Saint Patrick’s Day weekend, the Chess Club held their monthly Adult Beginner Tournament. David “This is Me” Green was the clear-cut favorite in the nine-player field.

The Chess Club would like to welcome WGM Jennifer Shahade, who will take the reins as our next Resident GM until March 28. In addition to our normal lecture schedule, Jennifer also will be conducting some special "Queen Power" events at the World Chess Hall of Fame.

On Tuesday, USA Today published a story that outlined everything “hip and happening” in St. Louis.

Not surprisingly, the World Chess Hall of Fame got a nod. Wait. What? Not surprising, you say?

If the idea that chess is hip and happening is foreign to you, then I assume you still have the antiquated stereotype of the pocket protector-wearing übergeek ingrained in your mind.

But times they are a-changin’ my friends.
