At the 2011 U.S. Championship, the defending champion took a large step Tuesday toward repeating his title. GM Gata Kamsky unearthed a win from seemingly infertile ground against GM Yury Shulman in the first game of their two-game title match. Shulman will take White tomorrow and has to win to extend the match into a Thursday playoff.

Round five of the U.S. Championship produced the most fighting chess so far at the 2011 U.S. Championship and U.S. Women’s Championship. Players of the Black pieces won an astounding six games, and half of the games went into the sixth hour. Three-fourths of the games ended with a winner, and even the defending champion could not get an easy day off.

Past the halfway point at the 2011 U.S. Championship and U.S. Women’s Championship, the students are schooling the veterans. After four rounds at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, most of the leaders could not tell you what life was like in the 1980s.

With players beginning to eye a spot in the semifinals, two-thirds of the games produced winners in round three of the 2011 U.S. Championship and U.S. Women’s Championship. The tournaments are being held concurrently from April 14-28 at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis.
