SAINT LOUIS, September 8, 2011 -- Two players have withdrawn from the Kings vs. Queens tournament, which is scheduled to begin this week in Saint Louis. Former World Champion Grandmaster Anatoly Karpov and Grandmaster Judit Polgar are both unable to attend, and tournament organizers have restructured the two fields to maintain rating equality between the two teams.

The Saint Louis Arch Bishops head into its second season in the U.S. Chess League with a revamped roster and a mission to make the play-offs. The team missed the play-offs in its inaugural season with a record of 5-5.

July Knights Recap

Nineteen players braved the Saint Louis heat to compete in the July Knights. The odds on favorite were the two Chess Club employees named Alex.

Expert-in-Residence Alex Marler got off to a hot start by winning his first game, then promptly withdrew. Conversely, Alex Vergilesov took a half-point bye for round 1, won his next game, then withdrew.
