Two Chess Veterans Join Board Of Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis

TWO CHESS VETERANS JOIN BOARD OF CHESS CLUB AND SCHOLASTIC CENTER OF SAINT LOUIS

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 10, 2009 - Two prominent members of the Missouri chess community, James Allan Davies and Ed Baur, recently joined the board of the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis.

Davies, 62, is a chess player and member of the U.S. Chess Federation since 1962. From 1971 to 1986 he was a chess coach at Ladue senior and junior high schools, where he was a math teacher. Since then, he has been a private chess tutor.

A member of the U.S. Chess Federation since 1964, he has played in hundreds of USCF-rated events. He was inducted into the Missouri Chess Hall of Fame in 2000.

Today, Davies is a computer programmer for the Carpenters District Council. He lives in University City with his wife.

Baur, 62, taught chemistry and mathematics at Rosary High school from 1969 to 1991 and coached the chess team there from 1975 to 1991. After that, he taught the same courses and coached the chess team at Vianney High School from 1991 until his retirement in 2007. He continues to coach the Vianney chess team in his retirement.

He has been a member of the Missouri Chess Association Board of Directors for 14 years, and president for six years. 

The author of "Griffin Chess," Baur teaches chess St. Louis Community College.

He is single and lives in St. Louis.

The Chess Club and Scholastic Center hosted the U.S. Chess Championship in May, which featured 25 of the best players in the country. From Oct. 3-13 it will host the U.S. Women's Chess Championship, consisting of 10 of the top 12 players in the nation.

The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis is a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 organization that opened in July 200 in St. Louis' Central West End. Founded by retired investment fund manager Rex Sinquefield, it has more than 500 members. The club offers free classes for beginners, discounted tournament entry fees and discounted merchandise for club members. Part of the club's mission is to support existing chess programs in area schools and develop new programs within regular school curricula.
