And it is simply the best of times to be a chess enthusiast, as the crown jewel in the chess world -- the World Chess Championship Match between Champion Magnus Carlsen and Challenger Viswanathan Anand -- is in full swing. IM Priyadharshan Kannappan overcame a strong field to win the 6th Annual Saint Louis Thanksgiving Open at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis on November 7-9. This year’s event featured a 47-player Open section with 17 titles, including Grandmasters Walter Browne, Ben Finegold and Fidel Corrales; along with two lower sections for a tournament total 91 players.
It’s playoff time for the 2014 U.S. Chess League, and Saint Louis is taking this win-or-go-home idea perhaps a bit too seriously. The Southern Division champions begin their playoff push in the quarterfinals, and the Arch Bishops aren’t just leaving losses out of sight, out of mind -- they’re leaving losses right out of the lineup.
The Chess Club has a solid team of associates and instructors who possess exceptional skill, knowledge and teaching styles. One of these chess gurus is Jason Fredericks, who recently joined our staff over the summer. Fredericks, 30 years old, currently holds a rating of 1982 and is the the number-one chess player from the country of Guyana, and still represents the South American federation as such. The youngest of four children, Fredericks was born in Guyana and moved to the U.S.
SAINT LOUIS (November 4, 2014) – From the same venue that hosts such high-quality events as the U.S. Championships and the global super-tournament Sinquefield Cup, the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis now presents a high-stakes slugfest between two of the world’s heavyweights.
The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis is thrilled to welcome legendary GM Walter Browne in his first visit to the U.S. Capital of Chess.
The legendary Browne, a six-time U.S. Champion and apparent king of the Open tournament, will participate in the Saint Louis Thanksgiving Open from Nov. 7-9 and surround the competition with several special lectures and discussions on life as an American chess hero throughout the 1970s and 80s.
This Sunday, the Chess Club and Scholastic Center is hosting a special grudge match between two of Saint Louis’ collegiate chess programs: Lindenwood versus Washington University.
Sunday's match is the third annual meeting between the two Saint Louis programs, with Lindenwood winning the previous two. This year’s battle, however, has grown to its biggest and strongest field yet: The 2014 showdown features 12 boards, with several quality matchups on the top boards.
The Monthly Knights tournaments are a great option for those tournament-inclined players who cannot commit to full weekend events. A new Knights tournament begins on the first Monday of every month, with each Monday evening bringing a new round -- and players may request a half-point bye for any round they may miss. This Swiss-style tournament regularly brings in players of all strengths and features payouts to three divisions (Open, U2000 and U1600), as well as longer time controls (G/70; d5) than some of the Chess Club’s other events.
FIDE Master Aviv Friedman presents middlegame positions and demonstrates the importance of formulating a plan, rather than just looking for "the move."
Tonight's Saint Louis Arch Bishops match versus the Carolina Cobras will be streamed live, featuring commentary by FM Aviv Friedman. First moves are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. local time.
